Off the clock work involves work that is performed for the benefit of the employer. Examples include:
Example: Mary answers phones in a call center. She is paid $10 per hour. Her shift is from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. Her employer requires her to arrive 15 minutes early in order to set up her work station, turn on the computers, and get ready to start working at 9:00. Mary must be paid for the 15 minutes of pre-shift work.
Example: Jim works in a chemical plant. His shift starts at 9:00 am. To prepare for his shift, Jim must put on special safety equipment which takes him 15 minutes. At the end of the shift, it takes Jim 15 minutes to take this equipment off. Jim must be paid for the 30 minutes required to 'don' and 'doff' his equipment.
